What is a windshield repair? How does a windshield repair work? Can my windshield be repaired? Should I replace my windshield instead of repairing it?
We know the answers to these questions because we hear them every day. To help you decide whether you should repair your windshield or replace it, we’ve answered the most frequently asked questions about windshield repair and provided our personal opinion on whether a repair is better than a replacement.
Let’s get this windshield repair FAQ started.
What Is The Difference Between A Windshield Repair and A Replacement?
A lot of people will assume that a windshield repair is the same thing as a windshield replacement. We’re here to set the record straight. They are two very separate things.
A windshield repair does not require removing the windshield, usually takes anywhere from 15 minutes to 60 minutes to complete and will cost about $50 to $100, depending on the number of chips or the size of the crack. It is a safer alternative to repair your windshield, instead of replacing the glass. A repair consists of injecting resin into the damaged glass and once cured, restores the structural integrity of your windshield. There are many benefits to a windshield repair instead of a replacement but in some cases, you may need to replace your windshield.
A windshield replacement involves removing the currently damaged windshield and fitting a new piece of glass to your vehicle. After the windshield is removed, the auto glass technician will clean and prepare your vehicle and apply urethane to bond the new windshield to your vehicle’s frame. You will typically have to wait a few hours to 24 hours before driving. Most windshield replacements take anywhere from 45 minutes to 120 minutes, depending on the type of glass needed and the vehicle make and model. Windshield replacements vary in costs and it is best to contact a certified glass shop for a detailed quote for your vehicle.
How Do I Know If My Windshield Can Be Repaired?
If your windshield chip is smaller than 2 inches or your windshield crack is smaller than 16 inches, you may be able to repair it. View our article on different types of windshield damage here.
How Does The Windshield Repair Process Work?
A windshield repair involves cleaning and treating the damaged area with specially designed resins and tools. In most cases, the damage can be repaired in less than 60 minutes. You can use a DIY kit to repair a rock chip or you can seek a certified glass repair technician.
Can A Long Crack In My Windshield Be Repaired?
This is a common windshield repair FAQ. Depending on the auto glass repair shop you use, some long cracks can be repaired. Any windshield cracks over 16 inches or in the driver’s field of vision should not be repaired and we recommend replacing your windshield.
Can The Windshield Damage Spread During A Repair?
Although it is rare, it is possible for the damage to spread during the windshield repair. In some cases, through no fault of the repair technician, the windshield damage can expand and require a replacement. Sometimes the pressure, glass temperature and the amount of stress put on the damaged glass will cause the cracks to spread out. This is something to be aware of when having your chips or cracks repaired. It is always better to use a company with a windshield repair disclaimer and warranty, to provide you with some peace of mind.
Will The Chip or Crack Be Invisible After It Is Repaired?
Unfortunately, no. A windshield chip or crack repair is used to prevent the damage from expanding and requiring a replacement. This procedure is done to restore the structural integrity of the glass. While all chips and cracks are different, most successful repairs will improve visually and leave a slight blemish where the impact point was. In most cases, you should expect the cosmetic appearance of the repair to improve when compared to the damage prior to the repair. It is best to cover a new rock chip with tape immediately, to help prevent dirt and moisture from entering the impact point. This can help with visual appearances after a successful windshield repair.
How Long Does It Take To Repair My Windshield?
Most windshield chip repairs will take anywhere from 15 minutes to 60 minutes to complete. Most windshield crack repairs will take anywhere from 30 minutes to 120 minutes to complete. These repair times all depend on the experience of the glass repair technician, the tools used, the size, the age and the location of the chip or crack. In most cases, a windshield repair will take a lot less time than to replace your windshield. Save yourself some more time by opting for a repair, whenever possible.
How Important Is It To Repair My Windshield?
In short, it is extremely important to repair your windshield. A lot of people will assume that a small chip in a windshield is just a minor annoyance. Think again. It is important to take care of any windshield damage as soon as possible to avoid the damaged area from spreading out and costing you a windshield replacement. A windshield repair will save you a lot of money, time and headaches in the future.
Where Are Windshield Repairs Done?
Most windshield repairs are completed at an auto glass shop, mechanic shop or body shop. They can also be completed in your driveway at home or your parking spot at work via a professional mobile service. The convenient thing about a windshield repair is that it does not require any large equipment or tools to operate.
How Much Does A Windshield Repair Cost?
The best thing about a windshield repair is that it costs much less than a windshield replacement. In some cases, your insurance company might cover the cost of a repair as it saves them more money in the long run. A typical rock chip repair can cost anywhere from $40 to $80 depending on the size and location of the chip. A windshield crack repair can cost anywhere from $100 to $200 depending on the size of the crack and the location it originates from. These prices will vary depending on which company you use and where you live. It is best to base your decision on quality and service instead of price. Remember, you get what you pay for!
Is There Any Kind Of A Warranty?
This question all depends on which company you use for your windshield repair. Some shops will offer a lifetime warranty or guarantee, whereas some will only offer a 60 or 90 day warranty. In our opinion, it is probably better to go with a company that offers a lifetime warranty as this will give you more peace of mind. Some shops will offer a full credit towards a windshield replacement, in the event that a repair fails and some will give you a full refund of your original purchase price. Make sure you do your research when it comes to choosing a certified windshield repair company.
Hopefully this article has shed some light on why a windshield repair might be a better alternative to a windshield replacement. In some cases, it may not be possible to repair your windshield but we are a strong believer that you should always try to repair your windshield, before opting to replace it.
